Participants in Bergen's Lutheran Study Days 2016

Pastor Michael Albrecht [September 2016]

Confessional Lutheran pastors and lay people from across Norway and Denmark gathered in Bergen, Norway, August 25-28 for the annual Lutheran Study Days, sponsored by the Bergen congregation of The Evangelical Lutheran Church (Det Evangelisk Lutherske Kirkesamfun or DELK, Norway’s oldest Lutheran free church) and the Bjørvin diocese department of FBB (For Bibel og Bekjennelse – an independent Norwegian Confessional movement). This year’s conference featured Pastor Jan Bygstad of the Bergen DELK congregation, as well as Professors Jim Nestingen and Steve Paulson from the United States and Olav Rørtveit, a Norwegian pastor and lecturer. The presentations were based on Martin Luther’s classic work, On the Bondage of the Will.

Pastors Jan Bygstad and Jon Magne Sønstabø lead the closing Divine Service.

The conference concluded with the Divine Service conducted by Pastor Jon Magne Sønstabø, who has served DELK's Bergen congregation together with Jan Bygstad since Fall 2015.

A playlist of video recordings of the presentations (in English and Norwegian) is available at the following YouTube link: https://youtu.be/chx21cJ_jNI?list=PLjdEjJyzMIIqzR24EC7nBzr3kc3mCwLGB

One of many Norwegian delights enjoyed by participants.

As an important city in Norwegian Reformation history, Bergen is a natural place for commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

First and foremost, the Reformation Jubilee is an occasion for boldly holding forth and confessing God's Word together with our Reformation fathers.

Richard Sovitzky with Bishop Thor Henrik With

Richard Sovitzky from Prague, who serves as Business Manager for the Eurasia Region of LCMS International Mission, chats with Bishop Thor Henrik With of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Norway, which is in the process of applying to join the International Lutheran Council.

Secondly, the jubilee provides occasion for studying specific marks of the Lutheran Church, and what distinguishes it from other Protestant traditions. These two themes will be emphasized throughout the 2017 presentations, which will focus on historical theology and Lutheran pastoral care.
